Headshave for JCWI: providing legal support for asylum seekers

Brintha Yasodaran is raising money for JCWI

Headshave · 28 July 2024

We work to ensure fair and just immigration, nationality and asylum law and policy and provide direct legal advice to those affected by UK immigration control. JCWI publically campaigns and advocates on behalf of immigrants and for changes to unfair rules and is independent of government funding.

Story

WHY SHOULD YOU DONATE?

A hostile environment has been created for people seeking asylum, meaning they are housed in terrible conditions like the Bibby Stockholm or live with fear and isolation because of threats of deportation.

They have been continually stripped of support, but we can’t let this continue. Seeking legal aid is one of the only ways asylum seekers can resist being detained or moved to dreadful housing allocations, but these lawyers are currently very overwhelmed.

By supporting this charity, you help asylum seekers reach the people who can truly help them resist inhumane attempts to contain and control them.

WHAT DOES JCWI DO?

1. Legal support

JCWI helps migrants with applications to the Home Office, appeals and judicial review. They also have a helpline to provide legal advice.

2. Challenging hostile migration narratives

They use law, advocacy and media to help challenge narratives about migrants that are damaging and discriminatory, for example by conducting workshops on how to tackle hostile narratives.

3. Challenging unjust laws

They challenge unjust laws and practices that restrict rights and lead to discrimination.

ABOUT ME

I have always secretly wanted to do a headshave but have never really found the courage. This felt like a good reason to as it was clear that people seeking asylum have been ruthlessly attacked by the state which has created a hostile environment and has made access to legal aid incredibly difficult. We must all try our best to resist the hostile environment and I want to convince as many people as possible to join the movement of resistance, through supporting these charities, donating, joining your local migrant justice campaign groups and anti-raids. I hope you can find it in you and be brave about calling out the injustices you see around you. Together we can show solidarity with people seeking asylum to ensure their rights.
