Story
In June of 2024, Dodger was found wandering alone at Devil’s Lake State Park—fragile, severely underweight, and clearly in distress. He was coughing, sneezing, and struggling just to get through each day. A kind stranger brought him to the Sauk County Humane Society in hopes that someone would come looking for him. But as the days passed, no one did.
Once in our care, Dodger quickly revealed the sweetest, most gentle soul. Despite everything he had been through, he greeted staff with quiet affection and trust. During his initial exam, it became clear just how much help he needed—he was battling a severe ear infection and ongoing respiratory issues that made it difficult for him to breathe without coughing or sneezing.
Dodger made multiple trips to Veterinary Emergency Services in Middleton, where he was diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux, a condition that caused stomach contents to flow back into his esophagus, leading to chronic coughing. On top of that, he was found to be in the early stages of pneumonia. His road to recovery would not be easy—but Dodger never stopped fighting.
During his time at the shelter, one of our staff members formed a special bond with him. Wanting to give him the best chance at healing, she welcomed him into her home as a foster. In just two short months, Dodger’s transformation was nothing short of incredible. With love, care, and proper medical treatment, he began to thrive.
In August 2024, Dodger officially became part of her family. Today, he lives a happy, healthy life with his mom, dad, his dog companion Stella, and their new baby, Oakland.
Dodger’s story is one of resilience, compassion, and second chances—but it’s also a reminder that none of this would be possible without support from our community.
Because of donations like yours, we were able to provide Dodger with the life-saving care he so desperately needed.
Last year, I was able to surpass my goal of $500. This year, I am hoping to double that!!! Please join me in supporting the Sauk County Humane Society for the 2026 PAWS Walk for Animals. Every dollar helps keep our doors open for animals like Dodger—animals who need us now more than ever.
