John's fundraiser for The Royal British Legion

John Burns is raising money for The Royal British Legion
“My journey to the 2027 London marathon and selection towards the Invictus Games 2027”
The RBL are the UK's leading charity providing financial, social and emotional support to millions who have served and are currently serving in the British Armed Forces and their dependents.

Story

In December, I survived a suicide attempt.

Now, I’m moving forward.

In April, I attended a recovery course at the Battle Back Centre in Lilleshall. This incredible facility and programme are funded by the Royal British Legion, and I experienced first-hand the positive impact they have on serving personnel and veterans.

Because of that, I want to give something back.

My goal is to raise £10,000 over the next year to support the Royal British Legion and the work they do for the Armed Forces community. As part of this challenge, I’ll be running the 2027 London Marathon for the Royal British Legion, alongside a range of other fundraising events.

I’m also currently on the selection pathway for the Invictus Games 2027. Whether I make the team or not, I want to help provide opportunities for others to benefit from programmes like Battle Back and contribute towards the training, equipment, and support needed for Team UK at the Invictus Games.

Now begins the next stage of my journey: training, learning more about myself, and continuing to recover, grow, adapt, and heal.

This isn’t just about sport.

It’s about rebuilding.

I live with depression and anxiety, while also navigating the lasting effects of trauma and undergoing assessments for ADHD and autism. None of these things define me, but they are part of my story.

I’m still here.

Still serving.

Still fighting.

This journey is about recovery, resilience, and proving to myself that there is more ahead.

Supported by family, friends, the military community, and organisations such as the Royal British Legion, this mission is bigger than just me.

If you’re struggling, please know that you’re not alone.
