The David Gordon Hospital serves a rural community in Malawi. The area is very poor and most people live on less than 16 pence a day. The incidence of HIV is high (about 11% - thats over 1 person in every 10 people having HIV) Maternal mortality is high (1 mother in every 120 births dies, in the UK the maternal death rate is approximately 1 in every 10,400 births)

The DGH has 136 beds but more people than this receive care, lying on the floor with their relatives providing care and food. The Hospital is owned and run by the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian but the church members are unable to provide all the funds to run the hospital and the patients are often too poor to pay for the care they need.
