2023 Vitality London 10,000 · 24 September 2023 ·

Pratham’s mission is to enable learning for school, work and life. Each year, we reach over 5 million learners through hands-on programmes in schools and communities, and by working in close partnership with governments to strengthen education systems at scale.

Story

The team at Cairneagle is taking on a team fundraising challenge. We will be taking part in the Vitality London 10k on Sunday 24 September to raise money for Pratham, an Indian-based education charity. The team are: Arun Kanwar, Sam Lecacheur, Angeliki Zacharaki, Rob Dancey, Ali Hinds, Jayanta Dasgupta, Joseph Kenley, Amy Cooper, Will Vardon, Max Wood-Robinson, Sagarika Unnikrishnan, Lydia Bockmuehl, and Vaidhiswaran Ramesh.

In the words of Nobel Laureate Abhijit Banerjee, "Pratham's impact on the lives of millions of kids has been tremendous; it is quite simply an exceptional, best-in-class organisation that has managed to scale across India." They have won many prizes, including the Kravis Prize, the Skoll Award, the WISE Prize, the LUI Che Woo Prize and, most recently, the Yidan Prize.

They conduct high-quality, low-cost and replicable interventions to address gaps in the education system. Their best-known programme, Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL), teaches basic literacy and numeracy in as little as 30 days for £14 per student. They offer this directly in 10,000 villages in 21 states in India and work with a number of state governments to implement it themselves, in some years, this enables them to reach a further five million children. The Global Education Evidence Advisory Panel has recommended it as one of very few Great Buys in their recent Smart Buys report.

They also offer an Early Childhood Development programme focusing on school readiness. Their Second Chance programme supports women back to school to complete their class ten exams, the gateway into the formal economy. Their vocational training programme is exceptional and has helped 100,000 young people into the formal economy in 10 years
