On September 11th 2016 , we learned of the devasting news that our precious daughter Fiona, had suddenly passed away. At 19 years of age, having just embarked on her new life at university, she succumbed to an aggressive and unforgiving strain of Meningococcal Septicaemia.

Principled and fair, humble and modest, sharp witted and funny, Fiona truly was a delightful daughter, grand daughter, sister and friend, and we miss her so much.

Along with Meningitis, this life-threatening infection affects approximately 8,000 individuals each year; with cases seen most commonly amongst babies, young children and teenagers. Those who survive such an illness, can be left with life changing disabilities, with individuals and families requiring much support.

The charity Meningitis Now offers such invaluable support for all families who have been touched by this often-devastating illness, and strives to raise public awareness on the symptoms and early warning signs to aid detection of a developing illness.

As this year’s Captain of Carden Park Golf Club and Fiona’s father, it seems a fitting and obvious choice to have Meningitis Now as the club’s nominated charity for 2024. To raise as much money as possible various events will be taking place throughout the year.

The joint challenge that has been set for 2 Carden Park members will consist of climbing the equivalent of 4 Mount Everests (approx. 116,000ft) on various Cumbrian and Scottish mountains, and running the length of Land’s End to John O’Groats (1000km), all this throughout my captaincy year. I will be taking on the hiking challenge and my friend, Dorian Hopkins, will be doing the running.
