Story
Every day, 240 people wake up to the life-altering impact of a stroke. I am one of them. After suffering an unusually large brain bleed, the odds were stacked against me — many do not survive, and those who do often face permanent wheelchair dependence. But through unwavering perseverance, world-class medical care, and the incredible love and support from friends and family, I am here today — alive and well, though with some imperfections.
Strokes among children and young adults are less common but I want to give back by supporting children and young adult stroke survivors through fundraising for the UK Stroke Association. For example £5000 would support Emotional Support Services where individual counselling sessions help stroke survivors to come to terms with the life-changing impact of stroke, this is critical for all survivors but especially for younger survivors. Or as little as £250 could help their Childhood Stroke Support Team to provide practical information and emotional support to parents.
One of my lasting challenges is a currently redundant left arm and a significantly altered gait caused by weak dorsiflexion and muscle spasticity. Walking any distance is both a physical and mental challenge — yet I am walking. Many stroke survivors, young and old alike, do not have this privilege.
To honour this journey and raise vital funds, I am committing to walk at least 5km every day for one year starting from 1 May 2026. No days off — not even on Christmas or birthdays. You are warmly invited to join me on any day along this path. You can follow my journey through my social media accounts and Strava.
Together, we can make a difference for younger stroke survivors who need hope, rehabilitation, and community support. Please help me raise as much as we can to empower the UK Stroke Association’s life-changing work.
