Story
I’m planning to trek to Everest Base Camp, inspired by the incredible achievements of Joe Winch from Climb to Recovery. Joe, who lives with CPTSD, has shown remarkable resilience by summiting Everest and helping others overcome mental and physical barriers through outdoor sports. Another key inspiration for me is Andrew Pickersgill. When I was diagnosed with CPTSD, Andrew - who has faced similar challenges - helped pull me out of a very dark place.
As a female veteran with PTSD, I’ve experienced the unique challenges women face in what’s often seen as a male issue. PTSD doesn’t discriminate, and the isolation many female veterans feel highlights the importance of safe, inclusive spaces. Climb 2 Recovery has been one of those spaces for me, offering a supportive community where women like me can heal, grow, and rebuild resilience through climbing and other outdoor activities.
The mountains have also been transformative in my recovery. Their vastness and stillness provide perspective and peace, while the physical challenges of climbing help build mental strength. For those with PTSD, nature offers a sanctuary - a space to process trauma and reconnect with yourself.
To honour the support I’ve received, I’ll be raising funds for The Poppy Factory, a charity helping veterans and others with mental health challenges find meaningful employment. Their mission resonates deeply with me, as I understand the importance of purpose and community in recovery.
The Poppy Factory’s mission is to support veterans with health conditions on their journey into employment and to continue supporting them whatever challenges they may face. The veterans they support are often 10 years from service and face many personal challenges. 4/5 report a mental health condition, often alongside a range of complex physical conditions.
By undertaking this trek, I hope to raise awareness of these incredible causes, challenge assumptions about female veterans, and give back to organisations that have been instrumental in my journey.
Give a gift of a brighter future today and help transform the lives of the most vulnerable veterans and their families.
