Remembering Ivan and supporting Mental Health Research UK

Carol Baines is raising money for Mental Health Research UK
In memory of Ivan Baines

Walk to remember Ivan · 2 May 2026

Mental Health Research UK: The first UK charity dedicated to raising funds for research into mental illnesses, their causes and cures.

Story

It's soon going to be 4 years since we lost our lovely Ivan to suicide, which is hard to accept as it often feels like just yesterday.

Rupert and I are fundraising again in Ivan's memory on 2 May with another 20-ish mile walk which we invite you to join us in person, or to support us from afar.

You may remember from last year that we have committed to funding a PhD research program, in Ivan's name, organised through MHRUK - the UK charity funding research into mental illnesses, their causes and cures. We had asked MHRUK to find a research program that focused on exploring new, improved pharmacological treatments for young people suffering from psychosis that don't carry challenging side effects. Following a rigorous application process, the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London has been awarded a 4-year funded PhD program to explore the use of a specific medical imaging technology to identify young people who could respond well to a promising set of drugs that use a different approach to current treatments, with less known side effects. We are excited that Rick Adams, Professor of Computational Psychiatry at UCL, will be supervising the 'Ivan Baines 2026 Scholarship'. All donations to our walk will go towards funding this specific MHRUK program and Rupes and I are matching all donations.

We are still planning the route for the walk, but it will start at 8.30am on Sat 2 May (or Sunday, if more people can make that day) within a 20-mile radius of Bath and will end up back in Bath. We'll make it easy for anyone who wants to join us from the start, mid, or just for the last mile!

Let us know if you can join us on the day and thank you for all your support - it really means so much to us and to the future of young people struggling as Ivan did. There has to be better treatments out there waiting to be discovered.

I hope you like the photos - the one on the right was a cheeky very young monkey - he still was as he grew up! x
