Since the year 2000 the Open Doors (OD) project has been working with asylum seekers, including the destitute, refugees and migrant workers (family and individuals). It was initiated by five members of the Princes Avenue Methodist Church to offer hospitality to the refugees who were arriving in Hull from Afghanistan, Kosovo and Serbia. Twenty-one years later, the range of support offered has grown and expanded, along with the need and with the widening extent of the geographical areas from which our clients are arriving. The majority are now from the middle east, but also from Africa, south America and the Far East.

Dear Friends,

I’d like to tell you why I am going to do a sponsored walk.

The global refugee crisis is one of the most pressing humanitarian challenges of our time. Millions of men, women and children have been uprooted by conflict, persecution, and unimaginable hardships. They flee their homes, seeking safety, and often arrive in foreign lands with nothing but the clothes on their backs and the hope that they can rebuild their lives.

As you may know, I volunteer weekly at Open Doors, helping people seeking asylum in our city. For over twenty years Open Doors has helped over a hundred asylum seekers a week. We provide a safe space to access a wide range of support, such as specialist advice, a meeting place, learning English, clothing and food parcels. The volunteers offer a helping hand, a friendly smile, and a sense of community.

On September 24th 2023, I will leave Porto and walk the ‘Camino Portugues’. This sponsored walk is 173 miles and will finish in Santiago on 10th October.

I want my walk to help people to understand the refugee crisis and also to raise £5000. The money will be used to provide food parcels and £10 a week for destitute asylum seekers, who don’t receive any support at all from the government.

I invite you to join me on this journey by donating and spreading the word about this important cause. I would be grateful if you can share this fundraising page with your friends, family, and colleagues.

Let's take steps toward a brighter future for refugees and people seeking asylum in Hull!

With best wishes,

Carole
