Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I have become a charity ambassador for the Stockport Fundraising Group for Myeloma UK and am trying to raise vital funding for this wonderful charity.
I was diagnosed with Myeloma myself in May 2022 at the age of 49. I didn’t fit into the ‘normal’ Myeloma category. I’m not male and I’m not aged between 60-70 years old. I’m not overweight, I don’t drink alcohol and have never smoked. I was a Primary School Teacher.
When I was first taken into hospital I was in kidney failure, had an enlarged heart and fluid on my lungs. It was then that they discovered I had Myeloma and I began my chemotherapy treatment.
I had a Stem Cell Transplant in April 2023. I was in remission until August 2026 when a blood test showed that my myeloma had started to return. Thankfully I have now been started on a new set of treatments which will hopefully put me back into a remission soon.
When I was diagnosed, I’d never heard of Myeloma before. I want to change this for others. Awareness and quick diagnosis is key.
Myeloma is the 19th most common cancer overall in the UK, accounting for roughly 2% of all new cancer cases. It is the third most common blood cancer, representing about 15% of all haematological cancers.
Since I was diagnosed there are already new treatments available. The statistics for survival rate and the time between remission and reoccurrence have also significantly improved thanks to research from Myeloma UK.
