Aphasia is a language disorder which affects a person’s ability to speak, read, write and understand language. There are an estimated 350,000 people living with a diagnosis of Aphasia in the UK, often the devastating result of a stroke or head injury. Aphasia Support is a registered charity providing tailored speech and language therapy and long-term support to people with Aphasia, and their carers. The charity aims to improve the quality of life for people with Aphasia, helping them to regain control, confidence and independence. With your kindness and generosity, we can create a world where every person with Aphasia has access to support and can communicate with confidence.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

“The month of May is Stroke Awareness month .. I will be raising money for Aphasia Support”

Around one in three people in the UK have aphasia after a stroke. Your ability to understand speech, speak, read, write and use numbers might be affected. Aside from all the other complications and hurdles following a stroke, for someone who has always had an amazing ability to speak this is HUGE.. it’s frightening, frustrating and very cruel..

JIM BUCKBY, my incredible Dad was living with Aphasia when he died.

Aphasia Support is based in Wakefield, a small group of amazing people doing fabulous work but based in the north.. unfortunately there is little or no support further south than Nottingham.. Dad had no support and it was a difficult time..

I will be swimming 7,500 strokes every week in May, 75 (hundred) strokes for every precious year he was alive.. why swimming? because my Dad loved swimming, that’s all..

Your valuable donation will help someone who feels isolated, angry and possibly without speech.. it could help buy sessions with a speech and language therapist or support an aphasia cafe where people can come together, share their experiences and hopefully feel less alone..

I’m not embarrassed to ask for your money today as tomorrow is not given and your donation WILL HELP someone who is living with aphasia TODAY, someone who might also get tomorrow..

THANK YOU!! Thank you for taking the trouble to read my story and thank you if you feel able to donate.. anything xx
