Catherine's fundraiser for GIST Cancer UK

Catherine Madden is raising money for GIST Cancer UK

Team: Team fundraising for GIST Cancer UK

Being dragged up Snowdon! · 5 September 2026

GIST Cancer UK works to help patients and families affected by GIST - a rare cancer. We provide a patient support network and host meetings for patients and health professionals. We fund research to improve understanding and find treatments for GIST cancer as well as a specialist PAWS-GIST Clinic.

Story

Earlier this year my friend and her family received news that her mum had been diagnosed with a rare tumour, and well, apparently this means I have to climb a mountain in the dark!!!

If not just for the sheer comedy factor of me climbing a mountain, please dig deep because it really is for such a good cause.

And, I was told there would be gin!

See Sarah’s message below:

In September, I will be walking up Snowdon in the early hours of the morning with seven close friends, aiming to reach the summit for sunrise to raise money for GIST UK.

Earlier this year, my mum was diagnosed with a GIST tumour, a rare form of cancer that most people have never heard of until it affects someone they love. Like many families, we were suddenly learning new terminology, navigating uncertainty and taking things one step at a time.

GIST UK has been an invaluable source of information and support for patients and families affected by this rare cancer. It receives no government funding and relies entirely on public donations to fund research, raise awareness and provide vital support.

I am incredibly grateful to be doing this walk alongside friends who have shown constant kindness, support and encouragement throughout my mum’s diagnosis. Having people beside you on a climb like this, both literally and emotionally, makes all the difference.

We will be setting off in the dark and climbing together to watch the sun rise from the summit. It feels like a fitting symbol of hope, strength and moving forward, even when the path feels challenging.

If you are able to donate, any amount would be hugely appreciated. Thank you so much for reading and for your support.
