My name is Cathy Park and I I work as a researcher at the Manchester Cell Matrix Centre, where I study diseases that affect the body's extracellular matrix, including Alport syndrome.

My research uses advanced bioimaging techniques to understand how Alport syndrome changes the kidneys, helping to build the knowledge needed to develop better treatments in the future. I work alongside Professor Rachel Lennon, whose team is leading pioneering research into Alport syndrome.

Although I spend most of my time in the laboratory, I wanted to do something that would directly support the people and families living with Alport syndrome today.

On 13 September, I will take on the Great North Run - the biggest half marathon in the world, with over 60,000 participants from all over the world!

This is my way of connecting my research with the community and raising awareness of this rare genetic condition.

I'm proud to be running for Alport UK, a charity that provides trusted information, supports families, drive research, and brings together patients, researchers and healthcare professionals to improve the lives of everyone living with Alport syndrome.
