Story
I'm walking the equivalent of a marathon (26.2 miles) over the month of July to support the valuable work done by PMRGCAuk.
Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory condition of unknown cause. It is recognised to be an autoimmune illness. It causes pain, tenderness and stiffness in the large muscles around the shoulders, hips and back, including the legs and arms.
While some people recover after a year or two of treatment with corticosteroids (steroids) some individuals may have disease resistant to treatment and need long-term steroids.
When diagnosed with PMR patients learn that the illness is likely to last for at least a couple of years, and steroids are the only effective treatment.
GCA (giant cell arteritis) can be equally frightening, with sudden and severe headaches and the possibility of severe visual loss.
PMR and GCA are relatively ‘unheard of’ in the general community and those diagnosed usually know of no-one else suffering from it, making it a frightening and isolating experience.
I was diagnosed with PMR in July 2024. I had never heard of it and was given very little information on diagnosis, other than a treatment plan and the symptoms of GCA (considered a medical emergency). Through my own research, I found the PMRGCAuk charity and the amazing forum they fund through Health Unlocked. It's been a life-line and I have learnt so much through the support available from these two sources.
A year on and I am just about coming to terms with the restrictions that PMR has placed on my lifestyle and am now pacing myself more appropriately. Having been unable to enjoy my normal levels of walking, cycling, yoga, pilates etc I have reached a point where I'm pretty desperate to start gently building my fitness levels up again. The WALK A MARATHON IN A MONTH campaign is the perfect challenge, gentle, achievable and a step towards a healthier body again!
PMRGCAuk are the only UK charity dedicated to PMR and GCA. They provide information, support and reassurance to people with either of these conditions and help to raise awareness in the medical world and in the general population so that people can get a speedier diagnosis if they have either of the conditions.
Both conditions can be life changing. Without prompt diagnosis and treatment, GCA can cause sudden onset blindness or stroke. Getting a prompt diagnosis and treatment is vital.
Please support me in my efforts to raise some funds for this much needed small charity. Anything you can give will be really appreciated.
Thank you.
