Dementia is a devastating illness that affects not only the individual diagnosed but also their entire family. It is often hard to recognise in the initial years, creeping up and is often very long-lasting. My own family has been touched by it through my nanny Theresa and my father-in-law, Jim. My mother and father looked after my grandmother for many, many years initially not realising she had dementia. I also witnessed 'Big Jim's' deterioration over many years. I saw how dementia reduced the size of my grandmother's world and the burden it placed on my parents. I also saw not only the physical toll on my father-in-law but also the tremendous burden on my mother-in-law, Ella. As well as a strain on our wider family.
Jim's battle with dementia particularly was a long and arduous one. While both he and my grandmother maintained a warm and optimistic disposition, the toll of the illness was evident in their repetitive behaviours, declining memory and ability to take care of themselves. It was particularly heart-wrenching to see my father and mother-in-law Ella navigate the daily challenges, especially as they battled their own health issues. Despite the hardships, Terry and Jim's love for people, life and their families never wavered, leaving a lasting impression on all of us.
As time passes, it's heartening to see advancements in dementia research and support. Recent studies have shed light on the complexities of the disease, offering hope for improved treatments and interventions. Organisations like the Alzheimer's Society play a crucial role in this fight, striving to create a world where dementia no longer devastates lives.
1/11 of people over 65 get dementia currently, in memory of Terry and Jim and in support of all those affected by dementia, let's continue to advocate for increased awareness, resources, and research funding. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of individuals and families impacted by this challenging illness.
This is the first time I've walked a marathon. Thank you so much in advance for your encouragement and support. :). Catriona xxx
