In 2023, I was diagnosed with syringomyelia, a rare neurological condition affecting approximately 8 out of 100,000 people.

Syringomyelia occurs when a cyst called a syrinx forms within the spinal cord. Over time, my syrinx grew larger, resulting in damage to my spinal cord and injury to the nerve fibers that carry information from my brain to my left upper body.

In December 2023, I underwent cervical decompression surgery at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH), which involved widening the space at the base of my skull to reduce pressure on the brain and spinal cord. Thanks to the treatment I received at RNOH, my syrinx has diminished to the point of near-disappearance.

While I continue to live with paresthesia on my left side, I am reassured that no other parts of my body will be affected.

On Sunday, October 12th, I will be running the Royal Parks Half Marathon to raise money for the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital because, thanks to them, I am still running.
