Chris to run Dragon’s Back Race to raise money for the North Wales Society of the Blind
A runner from Gwynedd wants to compete in one of the world’s toughest mountain races to raise money for a good cause.
Chris Williams, 47, dad of Cari, 18, and stepdad of Enoc, 18 and Begw, 14, from Bethesda, hopes to raise money for the North Wales Society of the Blind by running the Dragon’s Back Race which is 240 miles - from Conwy to Cardiff.
It's a six-day race up peaks including the Glyderau, Crib Goch, Wyddfa, Cadair Idris and to the Brecon Beacons down in the south.
It involves running over 60,000 feet from Monday, September 1 to Saturday, September 6.
Chris decided to do the challenge because of the support his wife, Einir, has received from the Society.
Einir lives with Stargardt's condition which means that she is now not allowed to drive a car and needs help to read small print.
Einir also works for the Society as audio books co-ordinator.
Chris said it was this race that inspired him to start running in the mountains.
He said: “It's one of the world’s most difficult races and I think it will be quite a challenge!
"I'm collecting money for the North Wales Society of the Blind. About a year and a half ago my wife, Einir, lost a bit of her sight.
"She went to hospital and found she has Stargardt's Disease. At the time it was a bit of a shock for us. Einir came here to the Society to talk to them and they were very good with her.
"They helped her a lot; she was able to get expert advice and they showed equipment for her to use and help her each day.
“They were great with her and I can’t give them enough praise.
"I wanted to give back to them and collect as much money as I can.”
Chris has set up a Just Giving page for people to donate money to the Society.
It will also be possible to follow his progress on the Web.
