Story
As many of you know, 14 years ago I was diagnosed with Stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which I developed while pregnant. In the years since, I've worked hard with my partner in crime, Emma Willis, to grow Shine Cancer Support into a national charity that supports adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s with cancer. We both wanted to make sure that no one felt as alone as we did - and we are getting there!
As we've grown our services, data has shown that rates of cancer in the under-50s is also growing. Shine is needed more than ever. So with that in mind, I'm taking on a few challenges....
They say that the definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting the same result. So this year, I've decided to do something different!
- The Hackney Half Marathon on 19th May - I've never run a half marathon. In fact, until a few weeks ago, I'd never run longer than 11km. I read a book about ultra running and had this idea that maybe my body had been hiding it's super long-distance running prowess....my training runs would indicate otherwise (21km really is LOOOONG way), but I'm going to give it a go!
- Throwing (this summer) - The last time I threw a discus was the mid-1990s and I wasn't any good then. However, my running club, the Cambridge Harriers, needs some women who can throw things and get them points at track meets. As I have no previous experience, every throw will be a personal best. I don't know yet whether I'll be chucking a javelin, a hammer, or a shot put, but I will keep you posted.
- English Cross Country Championships on 14th September - Have I ever run a cross country race? No! Did I need to qualify to run in a national-level event? Also no! In the spirit of trying new things, I decided to see how I do....it was scheduled for Feb but got rescheduled due to the weather. Having it pushed back to Sept will either mean I have more time to get fit....or more time to get unfit. We'll see.
- Shine's September Challenge - more details on this soon, but we'll be running a challenge throughout the month to get people active & fundraising.
Shine supports the 38,000 adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s who are diagnosed with cancer in the UK each year. Cancer as a younger adult is lonely but Shine gives people a community and people around them who get it. We run a whole range of online and in-person programmes, all of them co-created with younger adults. We do amazing work but with no Government funding, we need to raise money each and every year to keep doing it. Your donation will help keep the magic of Shine alive!
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
