Story
1 in every 125 babies is born in the UK with a serious heart condition, and I’m taking on the 125 Challenge for Tiny Tickers to help them.
My beautiful baby Denver was born in March, and two days after she was born, her heart condition (Tetralogy of Fallot) was found during a newborn check before we were due to be discharged. Despite having multiple scans during my pregnancy, her heart condition wasn’t detected. She had her open heart surgery a week and a half ago, and is doing really well.
But, I’ve spoken to other mums whose babies heart conditions also went undetected at birth, so this happens way more often than it should. For some babies, going undetected in pregnancy or after birth can mean they need emergency surgery or unfortunately don’t get the care they need quickly enough.
£670 will train 10 sonographers to be better able to detect heart conditions during pregnancy scans, giving that baby’s heart the best chance of beating their condition.
A baby is born with a serious heart condition every two hours in the UK and despite congenital heart disease being one of the biggest killers of infants, only around half of congenital heart defects are picked up during routine prenatal scanning. Tiny Tickers help babies who leave hospital with their heart defect undetected, increasing detection rates, improving a baby’s chances of survival and long-term quality of life.
Thank you for reading, and supporting a cause very close to our hearts ❤️
