The Lloyd Cowan Bursary was set up in memory of Lloyd Cowan MBE, who believed that no one with sporting potential should be held back by a lack of support and opportunities. The Bursary awards grants of up to £500 once a year to qualified coaches and unfunded athletes aged 16-23, for whom cost is a barrier to accessing developmental opportunities in athletics. Lloyd was an international athlete before hanging up his spikes and becoming one of the UK’s most successful coaches. He guided many leading British sprinters, including World, Olympic and Commonwealth 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu and European and Commonwealth 110m hurdles gold medallist, Andy Turner. Tragically Lloyd died in January 2021, aged 58, after contracting COVID-19.

Story

Anyone who knew Lloyd Cowan knows that he was a force of nature in athletics. His dedication to nurturing talent, inspiring athletes, and guiding coaches to reach their full potential left an indelible mark on the sport.

For Lloyd, it was about empowering others, believing in them when they didn’t believe in themselves, and helping them achieve greatness.

Lloyd had an incredible impact on everyone he worked with. But when Lloyd passed away in 2021, the athletics community lost not only a legend but also a true mentor and friend.

However, through the Lloyd Cowan Bursary, his mission continues to live on. This bursary was created to carry forward Lloyd’s extraordinary legacy by supporting young, unfunded athletes and coaches who face financial barriers. Since its inception, the Lloyd Cowan Bursary has helped almost 270 athletes, giving them the opportunity to chase their dreams and push beyond their limits.

The bursary is more than just financial support—it’s a lifeline for those who have the talent but lack the resources to take their athletic journey to the next level.

I am proud to be part of this cause. In June 2024, I took on my first-ever 5k at a These Girls Run retreat, and I was hooked. Since then, my running has really taken off and I can’t wait to run for something so meaningful. I’m asking for your support as we continue to honor Lloyd’s memory and help the next generation of athletes and coaches thrive. Your contribution, no matter the size, will make a significant impact, allowing us to support even more deserving individuals who are working hard to achieve their dreams in athletics.

Together, we can help carry forward Lloyd’s incredible legacy—ensuring that his passion for the sport and his belief in others lives on for many years to come. Every donation counts. Thank you so much for your support; it means the world to us and to the athletes whose lives you’ll be helping change.
