Story
In 2016 sadly my mother passed away after a short illness. As I left the church after the funeral service, the first person I saw was John Hewitt who, without hesitation, stood tall telling me that he was there for me if and when I ever needed anything. No words were spoken but it gave me a great sense of relief knowing I could reach out and that someone was there. Just in case.
When John lost his eldest daughter Kelly ( Aged 24 years )to suicide in December 2018, a group of close friends and family decided to do a cycle ride in her memory. This quickly gathered pace and in 2020
12 cyclist completed John O’Groats to Lands End a distance of 1000 miles.
With the money raised John and a few others formed a charity, Kellys Heroes, to focus on bereavement after suicide and suicide prevention through a dedicated phone line where people could talk openly and confidently.
Since these very basic, but important beginnings, the charity has grown to where it is today. Helping to save lives and to support those in grief of a lost loved one.
I am so grateful to be a part of this incredible team with John, his daughter Amy and nine other cyclists along with a great support crew to create some fabulous memories and to share this experience together.
Please show your support as we cycle over 1200 miles from Gibraltar ( Rock Bottom) back to the UK over 14 days by spreading the word, donating if you can or sending us messages of encouragement.
Your support will mean the world to us.
Be assured that every penny donated goes directly to the charity. All the cyclist, support staff etc cover all their costs individually. This includes clothing, bikes, accommodation, travel etc.
Many Thanks to you all.
Charlie Higgins.
