Charlie's fundraiser for My Name'5 Doddie Foundation

Charlie Leech is raising money for My Name'5 Doddie Foundation

Beaune to Barolo cycle · 11 September 2025

In the past two years, Berry Bros. & Rudd have raised over £600,000 for My Name’5 Doddie Foundation – and are aspiring to raise #£1Million!

Story

You have a one in 300 lifetime chance of developing motor neurone disease (MND). Half of the people diagnosed die within 24 months, a third within one year. There is currently no cure.

MND is a cause close to our hearts. In 2018 our friend and colleague Davy Zyw was diagnosed with MND, but he has defied the odds by surviving far beyond the two-year average life expectancy. All the while, he's been a source of incredible inspiration. He's tirelessly raised money and awareness through extraordinary physical feats, most recently seeking to be the first person with MND to join Team GB at the Winter Paralympics in 2026.

In support of Davy - and the thousands of others living with MND now and in the future - we are gathering friends and colleagues from the wine trade on an epic cycling challenge from Beaune in Burgundy to Barolo in northern Italy.

This is no holiday, it's 600km which takes in some of the Alp's most iconic climbs building to the equivalent of the height of Everest. This far exceeds my cycling ability, and I’m sure will push me to my limit. That said, when you compare the brief suffering of a few days to the challenge that Davy all those affected by MND face, there is no space to feel anything other than grateful to ride in solidarity.

The sad truth is, Davy should be part of the Peloton but is no longer capable. When the plan for Beaune to Barolo was hatched two years ago on our ride to Champagne, he was leading the team.

My Name’5 Doddie Foundation are helping to fund promising clinical trials across the country. These trials are getting closer to finding a meaningful treatment, and a cure for this life-stripping condition, but for many this is not quick enough.

MND is not incurable, it’s just underfunded.

Your help in donating and spreading awareness is very much appreciated.
