Barnsley Hospice provides specialist palliative and end of life care for adults living with a progressive life-limiting illness, and the people close to them. We are here for people from the point of diagnosis and throughout their palliative care journey, including at the end of their life.

Story

I’m Charlotte and I am wanting to raise at least £1000 to give something back to Barnsley Hospice who were amazing with the support and the care they gave to my mum throughout her time there and also to our family in her final few days.

My lovely mum, Sharon Driver passed away on the 15th June 2025 from reoccurring breast cancer that spread throughout her body and was no longer treatable.

Before mum went into Barnsley Hospice I wasn’t really sure what a Hospice was like but my thoughts of them were quite scary.

Barnsley Hospice is such a warm, welcoming place and has amazing facilities that make it as nice as possible for family members, even children to visit loved ones that are really poorly.

When mum was in her final few days the staff went above and beyond to ensure that all 13 of us that wanted to be with mum were fed , kept updated with what was happening, that we stayed hydrated with lots of teas and coffees and let us have the most precious time with her which we never will never forget. (I’m still amazed we could even fit all 13 of us in a room)

The love and care the staff gave to mum was so heartwarming to see. Many times I walked in after they’d been with her and they’d be stroking her hand or hair, or giving her a hug and a chat.

I feel so lucky that mum was able to spend her final days feeling so comfortable and peaceful.

I cannot believe how much the Hospice relies on donations as the NHS funding does not cover the costs to keep it running. Barnsley Hospice needs to raise £3.5 million a year as the NHS only gives an annual grant of £1.7 million.

So I’d like to organise a 14 mile Monsal Trail Charity Cycle’ to take place on Thursday 17th July. There will be 15 of us taking part and we have been provided with bikes free of charge donated from Hassop Cycle Hire Station. 14 miles may not be a challenge for many people but for someone who hasn’t been on a bike in many many years it definitely will be!!

Thank you for your time reading this and for any help you can give with donating to the Hospice in memory of my beautiful mum to help other families experience the same moments as we did.
