Story
I’ve never been much of a runner - and after my last attempt, I can confirm I still don’t enjoy it. So naturally, instead of doing something sensible, I’ve signed up for something arguably worse…
Helen and I have decided to complete the Three Peaks 24-hour challenge.
Two friends. Three mountains. One day. No sleep. Bad decisions. Blisters pending.
This isn’t just about proving I can survive on snacks, stubbornness, and questionable life choices though.
I’m doing this in memory of my brother, who we lost in 2018. It was sudden, unexpected, and something that changed everything. He was studying Electrical Engineering and Computing at university, completely in his element, doing something he genuinely loved.
But more than that, he was someone who just got stuck into things. From the age of 16, he spent years rebuilding a 1980s Range Rover Classic from scratch. No shortcuts, no giving up, just patience, skill, and determination (qualities I will absolutely be trying to channel somewhere around hour 18 when I’m questioning every decision that led me here).
Some of my favourite memories of us are the simple ones, like bouncing on the trampoline for hours, blasting I Want to Break Free by Queen on repeat. No worries, no pressure, just pure, loud, slightly chaotic fun. It feels fitting in a way… because this challenge is also about breaking free - from silence, from stigma, and from the idea that people have to struggle alone.
I’m fundraising for Mind because mental health support is something that truly matters. No one should feel like they have nowhere to turn, and Mind works to make sure people have access to the help and understanding they need.
This challenge will be tough - physically and mentally. There will likely be moments of regret (probably quite early on), but it’s nothing compared to why I’m doing it.
So this is for him. For the memories, the laughter, and the moments that still mean everything.
And if I somehow make it through all three peaks in 24 hours, I’ll consider that a minor miracle, and a strong argument for never doing this again.
If you’re able to donate, share, or even just check in on someone you care about, it all makes a difference.
Thank you for your support 🤍
