I am running the London Marathon in aid of the wonderful Havens Hospices in Southend-on-Sea, Essex. I can't quite remember why running a marathon at 50 years old seemed like a good idea - a predictable midlife crisis - but my knees would be hugely grateful for any "encouragement" you might like to give.

Fair Havens hospice is a charity very close to my heart. Their incredible nurses cared for my mother at home when we lost her at Easter, 2012. The respectful, patient and loving support the hospice nurses gave to her - and all of our family - brought immense comfort during some very difficult days. We were all hugely grateful.

Little Havens hospice, which I recently visited, provides specialist care for babies and children with complex or incurable conditions from across Essex. Their facilities are beautiful and inspiring and absolutely vital.

Both hospices are entirely reliant on ongoing fundraising to continue their incredible work and I would love to make the next few months of agony count for something meaningful. Every donation will be very gratefully received.
