Story

The original target was Ā£2000 however with a HUGE thank you to everyone who has sponsored Team Tom Iā€™ve extended this to Ā£3000!!

My husband Tom Rigby, was diagnosed with bowel cancer on 1st March 2022 after he acted upon his symptoms quickly by contacting his GP and pushing for a FIT test.

Tom's journey wasnā€™t straightforward due to a mix-up with his treatment options as the more scans and consultant appointments he had the more complicated his diagnoses became.

Tom started his chemo journey on 20th May, due to Tom's age and staging of cancer the plan was to ā€˜go hard or go homeā€™ so he knew he was in for a tough ride.

Throughout his whole treatment journey, Tom was committed, brave, strong and always full of humour. He was determined to still have a full family life and spend as much time with our two young boys as possible.

Tom dislocated his vertebrae in January 2023 which led to him being hospitalised. Tom was transferred to Wakefield Hospice for rehabilitation and stayed for 4 weeks. During this time Tom started experiencing severe headaches which once he had more scans revealed that the cancer had spread into his brain.

Tom spent his 40th birthday in the hospice but was discharged the day after.

The care that Tom received within those 4 weeks was PHENOMENAL! All the staff from the cleaners to the consultants were so kind, considerate, uplifting and professional.

On 1st March 2023 Tom and I attended his consultant appointment which was to be the last. She told us that the cancer had taken too much of a hold and therefore no further treatment could prolong the inevitable.

News no one ever wants to hear, and to this day I can still hear every word!

Tom deteriorated faster than we ever thought possible and was back in the hospice within 3 weeks of his consultant appointment.

Again the hospice couldnā€™t do enough for us. As they knew Tom from his previous stay they knew how important family was to him, they gave him a room with an enclosed garden so our boys could visit and play outside. They provided toys so the boys could draw pictures, and create models all whilst visiting Daddy.

When it came to Tom's final days, I was able to stay with him, they would make me up a bed and turn down our room just like a 5-star hotel. The hospice staff are angels, nothing was too much trouble and they made you feel loved and looked for just like you should when you are dealing with and caring for a dying loved one.

After a very short battle, Tom passed away peacefully as I held his hand on 6th April 2023.

Because the hospice is so phenomenal and is very close to many people's hearts we would love it if you could join us in our bid to give something back by raising money to support their amazing work.

Tom leaves a legacy behind in his boys and he will forever be remembered for the humorous, hardworking, kind, generous and all round good man that he was.

So we have a group of 34 running the 10k in Tomā€™s memory. (The number keeps rising)

Our friends and family mean the world to us and Tom played a big part in a lot of peopleā€™s worlds.
