Chasing the sun for Oarsome Chance

Paul Napthine is raising money for Oarsome Chance

Chase the Sun 2025 for Oarsome Chance · 21 June 2025

OC provides intensive support for young people in the Gosport and Havant areas in Hampshire who are disengaged from education. We provide vocational skills training like carpentry, mechanics and bike recycling, along with outdoor activities like rowing, sailing and cycling.

Story

Many of us take it for granted that we can jump on a bike and hit the trails or roads. To get away from it all for a while and feel so much better for it.

Many of the young people attending Oarsome Chance work with don’t have that opportunity. Not only do they not have bikes, they have no way of getting out to places to ride a bike. Many have experienced extreme trauma and neglect. Oarsome Chance have seen first hand how getting these brilliant young people on a bike and hearing them 'woop' for joy down a trail at QE Country Park makes them feel like a kid again. Cause, lets face it, they are still kids!

So, on 21st June myself and five other likely lads (still also kids) will be cycling across the county (330km) in one day with the aim of beating sunset! This will be to raise some money to not only get some bikes for Oarsome Chance to use as part of its programme, but, also to help train young people to work and fix bikes as well as get out on them in the amazing green spaces across Hampshire.

We will start our day at 4.34am in Minster on Sea in Kent and cycle as fast as we can… but not to fast! The aim being to arrive the other side of the country to Weston Super Mare in Somerset before sunset at 9.30pm… some 330kilometers later! We will stop, we will be tired, we will have dark moments but we will keep pedalling… £10 will sponsor a km... every penny gets us closer to the end... Thanks for the support.
