Story
Throughout September, Cheltenham Sea Cadets will be taking on a unit-wide challenge to virtually row the River Thames from Lechlade to Windsor and back again, a total distance of approximately 197 miles (319 km). Every metre rowed by our cadets and staff will contribute towards our cumulative total as we work together to complete the journey.
The challenge is inspired by a remarkable achievement from nearly 25 years ago, when a team of Cheltenham Sea Cadets completed a sponsored row of the actual River Thames from Lechlade to Windsor, a journey of approximately 99 miles (159 km). This year, we are raising the bar by attempting the return journey as well, making our virtual challenge twice the distance.
In addition to promoting teamwork, resilience, determination and physical fitness, the challenge will help raise funds towards the purchase of a new Trinity 500 rowing boat for the 2027 season.
A new Trinity 500 costs almost £7,000. Thanks to the generosity of the Mayor's Charity, we have already secured £2,000, giving us an excellent start towards our goal.
The purchase of a new boat will help us continue to develop rowing opportunities for our cadets and support training, competition and adventure on the water for many years to come.
