Story
Hello everyone,
Amy, father and I will be running the Chelmsford half marathon on the 2nd March 2025 for the children’s burns club. Here is a little information on the charity;
A burn injury can be one of the most distressing things that can happen to a child and their family. Despite this most children cope very well following their injuries, however, in some cases a burn injury can impact on a person’s confidence, self-esteem, body image and relationships with family and friends.
Based at Broomfield Hospital The Children's Burns Club (CBC) is a charity within the Mid and South Essex Foundation Hospitals charities and supports children in London and the South East who have had a burn injury and their families. Recovery from a burn injury can be a painful, difficult and long process. The psychological impact on both the children and their families can be significant, as all involved try to overcome the often traumatic experience, as well as adapt to uncertainty over the future. Many children experience an altered body image which can impact significantly on their self-esteem; often affecting their social and emotional development and leaving them vulnerable to problems such as depression and anxiety. The CBC provides opportunities to meet other children and families who have had a similar experience as well as various opportunities for support and rehabilitation. We aim to provide this support through events that include activities that are fun but also challenging. We have found that successfully completing a challenging activity is one of the best ways for our members to increase their self-esteem. The workshops and support groups we run alongside these activities serve to give our members and their families the opportunity to openly discuss and learn ways to manage the issues they face on a day to day basis
