6-Week 5K Journey for Scoliosis Awareness Month · 12 July 2025

We are the official charity of NHS Lothian, supporting all its work, all its staff and all the patients and families it cares for. From the everyday to the transformational, from birth to end of life care, we’re here to help everyone give something back to move health forward.

Story

Hi, I’m Chloe Henderson, 23, from Clydebank.

Scoliosis can affect patients in different ways, from mild discomfort and posture changes to persistent pain and reduced mobility. For some, it can impact breathing and overall quality of life, making proper care and treatment essential. Scoliosis treatment can involve exercises, braces, pain relief, or surgery depending on the condition’s severity.

At 20 years old, in June 2022, I was diagnosed with Idiopathic Scoliosis—a condition where the spine curves abnormally without a known cause. It was a shock - I’m truly thankful to have such supportive family and friends around me. I have been determined ever since to be as active as I can, not let it get me down or get in the way of any new personal goals I set. Idiopathic Scoliosis is the most common form of scoliosis, often starting in adolescence, and while doctors don’t fully understand what causes it, genetics may play a role.

I’ve loved dancing ever since I was a little girl and currently train with an amazing dance company called Connect. I’m also proud to be part of a supportive girls’ gym community called Glow Girl Fitness. I’m excited to try a new sport and keep moving forward, showing that scoliosis will not stop me from chasing my goals.

June is Scoliosis Awareness Month, and I’m fundraising to support scoliosis care at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh by completing a 5k Run (following a 6 Week Plan). All donations will go directly to the Scoliosis Research Fund, overseen by Dr. Thanos Tsirikos, which supports research and development, specialist equipment, staff education and training.

I am so grateful to be cared for by Dr. Thanos Tsirikos himself and the amazing team at the Scottish National Spine Service, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, whose work and research make a real difference for people like me. My scoliosis is being monitored for any signs of progression to help guide treatment decisions and the ongoing support and care they give me honestly means the world.

This cause is very close to my heart, and I want to show that scoliosis does not have to hold you back - if anything it has made me more resilient and determined 💖
