Chris's fundraiser for Colne Open Door Centre

Chris Burfitt is raising money for Colne Open Door Centre

Montane Spine Challenger South · 14 June 2025

The aim of the Open Door Centre is to provide assistance to improve mental health and wellbeing, reduce isolation, alleviate suffering, raise aspirations and build resilience. We also aim to prevent food poverty, poverty, debt, unemployment, homelessness and anything that causes stress and anxiety.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

At 8am on Saturday June 14th I will be setting off from Edale in Derbyshire running, walking and crawling the ‘Spine Challenger South’.

We will have two and a half days (60 hours) to navigate 108 miles up the Pennine Way to Hardraw, just north of Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales.

As you can imagine, being the Pennine Way, the route is far from flat, and the weather conditions can be extremely challenging, even in the summer (there’s a winter version run in January!). Surprising as it may seem, there’s people even madder than me doing the Spine Challenger North that goes from Hardraw to Kirk Yetholm (160 miles in 4.5 days) and the whole ‘Spine’ – the complete Pennine Way (268 miles in 7 days). I will update this page with a ‘tracking’ link for anyone who feels like ‘dot watching’ as I make my way up the country.

To make the pain worth it, I have decided to raise some money for a local charity that provides food parcels, counselling, a community café and a community garden in the local community here in Pendle. Shockingly the borough I live in has the highest rate of child poverty in the UK and this charity’s food parcels, Christmas present packages, café and counselling all help support the most under privileged in the area that I live in.

The running club I am a run leader for – Pendle Trail Running Club – donate regularly to the charity, and several of the club members are volunteers at the food bank and with the counselling service, so it was a logical choice as a beneficiary.
