Story

Running for Havens – Southend Half Marathon 2026

Last year, I stood on the Southend seafront with that familiar mix of nerves, excitement, and “why am I doing this to myself” energy. The crowds were buzzing, the sun was out, and once the race started, something just clicked. The atmosphere carried me, my friends' and family's energy kept me going, the support lifted me, and crossing that finish line felt like unlocking a part of myself I didn’t know was there.

So here we go again!

This year I’m taking on the Southend Half Marathon once more. I’ll be running in memory of my father‑in‑law, Ray Mailley. Ray was one of those rare people who were always there when you needed him. Losing him left a huge gap in our lives, and there isn’t a day we don’t feel it. Running this race is my way of celebrating him and giving back to the people who supported him and us when we needed it most.

That’s why I’m raising funds for Havens Hospice.

Their care, compassion, and dedication made an enormous difference to Ray and our family. They support people living with complex or incurable conditions, helping them stay comfortable, supported, and surrounded by love whether at home or through their hospices, Fair Havens and Little Havens. They truly live their mission of “making every day count.”

And because every good challenge needs a team, I’m not running alone.

My good friend Richard Barrett is back for round two clearly he didn’t learn his lesson last year. And we’ve also managed to rope in my old work colleague James Bentley for the ride.

Yes, James… you’re officially in. No backing out now.

This year isn’t just about the miles. It’s about memory, gratitude, friendship, and doing something meaningful together. Every donation, no matter the size, helps Havens Hospice continue their vital work for families just like ours.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page and for supporting a cause that means so much to me, my family, and everyone who relies on Havens.
