Story
Harry’s Pals “up North”
(Chris, Simon, Richard and Frank)
6 years ago, two of us (Chris & Simon) completed a 170-mile Coast 2 Coast cycle. Even then, I have to say our bodies were suited more to comfort than endurance.
If I’m honest, I’m not sure we’ve totally recovered from the trauma! However, being a trustee for Harry’s Pals has made me realise that test is nothing compared to the challenges faced by the parents and families of children given a life-threatening diagnosis, who use the services provided by this fantastic small, but growing charity.
So, with that in mind, I asked Simon (after a couple of beers) if he thought we were ready to challenge ourselves again. Unselfishly, and perhaps foolishly, he agreed.
Not long after that conversation, I asked long time friend (of me and my aching bones) Richard “Physio” Kunz if he would sponsor us for the ride. “I’ll do better than that, I’ll join you!” was his response, and just like that, Harry’s Pedalling Pals up North was created. I also told Richard Harry’s Pals vision is that
Every parent in the UK receiving a diagnosis that their child has a life-threatening condition, is provided with information about Harry’s Pals at point of diagnosis”.
We wanted to introduce local parents to the charity but didn’t know who to contact at the local hospital’s Neo Natal Unit. “Don’t worry” he said “I think I know someone who can help. Before we knew it, Frank Swinton Consultant Anaesthetist and former Deputy Medical Director at Airedale General Hospital had put us in touch with the right people for the Yorkshire & Humber regional NHS. And guess what? Frank has asked to join us on our Coast-to-Coast challenge.
Perhaps you like the thought of four over ambitious /under prepared bus pass candidates gasping for breath on the 20% climb out of Settle but whatever your reason for supporting us, and whichever of us you know, please do give what you can and understand that it will be very well spent and will make a huge difference for families who otherwise would be facing unimaginable challenges with no help, respite or support.
Please take a moment to hear from some of those you’ll be helping by watching this short film.
