Story

In the journey of life, there are lots of challenges or “bumps in the road.” While some are beyond our control, others are within it.

In 2023, I decided to get up off the couch and start my running journey. I have found running hugely beneficial for my physical health, mental health, and Type 1 diabetes management.

I have therefore set myself the challenge of running a marathon.

On Sunday, 2nd November 2025, I will be running an epic 26.2 miles through the five boroughs of New York City to complete the New York Marathon. This will be my first-ever marathon.

Durham Area Disability Leisure Group — or DADLG for short — is a local charity that aims "to provide sports, leisure, and social opportunities for children and young people with disabilities living within Durham and the surrounding areas."

Disabled children and their families often find it difficult to access everyday activities, so DADLG provides a structured and supportive environment where everyone can get involved and try new things — no matter their challenges.

The charity is run by a small team of dedicated volunteers and staff who give up considerable time and expertise to ensure that the charity runs smoothly and continues to offer great opportunities to its members. I personally give my time as the Chair of the Board.

The charity means a lot to me, as my daughter Poppy is one of the young people who benefits from it — along with my other children, Oliver and Isabelle — since the charity supports the whole family. I've seen firsthand how incredible this organisation is, and how my daughter has grown as a person in this safe and inclusive environment.

I’ve seen how deeply valued DADLG is by its members, with heartfelt feedback like:

"Because of you, we get to have the family days out that others take for granted — just thank you times one million."

Please help me in my sporting challenge to support DADLG in continuing to provide sports, leisure, and social opportunities for children and young people with disabilities in Durham and the surrounding areas.

The trip is self-funded, so every penny raised will go directly to DADLG, helping them to continue the incredible work they do. If you can, please support the charity in any way — whether that's through a donation or simply sharing the cause with others.
