Helping Rhinos is an international NGO. Our aim is to establish secure rhino strongholds through creation of innovative protection strategies, sustainable land management operations that ensure a rich, biodiverse ecosystem, and inspire local communities to proactively engage in rhino conservation.

Story

Tragically, Griffin Pollack, passed away unexpectedly at the tender age of 13 in September 2023, coinciding with World Rhino Day. Despite his deep affection for these majestic creatures, he never had the opportunity to witness a rhinoceros in person, a dream he held close to his heart. Nevertheless, videos of rhinos never failed to brighten his days, instilling in him a profound sense of joy.

His mother, Christine Wellman Pollack, is honoring her son’s memory in a unique and meaningful way.

Griffin's concern for the well-being of baby rhinos was a testament to his compassionate nature. His empathy extended beyond wildlife, as he was known for befriending and supporting his fellow classmates who felt out of place or alone. At the age of 9, Christine had a young rhino, Bhanoyi, adopted in Griffin's name through the Helping Rhinos organization, reflecting his enduring love for these endangered animals. Bhanoyi is currently doing well in the wild in South Africa and has been known to return to the Zululand Rhino Orphanage for a visit.

Griffin was also deeply affected by the news of the passing of Sudan, the last male northern white rhinoceros, in 2018. The loss of this iconic animal weighed heavily on his compassionate heart, further fueling his desire to make a difference in the protection of rhinoceroses.

Now, a young rhino has entered the world, born at the time that Griffin departed from it. Tragically, the mother of this newborn, like Griffin, met an untimely death in the wild. The convergence of these events underscores the profound connection between Griffin and the young rhinoceros, making a compelling case for the animal to bear his name—a fitting tribute to a young man whose compassion knew no bounds. The idea holds special significance due to the remarkable parallels between Griffin's life and the circumstances surrounding the young rhino's arrival.

MEET RHINO GRIFFIN

Thought to be just nine weeks old and weighing 147kg or about 324lbs he had been found next to his mother in her dying hours. He had been observed calling for his mum and even trying to fight off veterinarians and reserve staff as they tried to help her, but sadly nothing could be done.

In this act of remembrance, Christine seeks to celebrate Griffin's spirit and the values he held dear. Naming this baby rhino after him serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring impact of his kindness and empathy, carrying his legacy forward in a cause that was so close to his heart.

As Griffin’s mother and older brother Ryder endeavor to ensure that Griffin's memory lives on, the naming of the baby rhino stands as a symbol to the enduring power of compassion and the powerful bond that unites all living beings, human and animal alike.
