Story
Thank you for visiting my JustGiving page supporting the MND Association 💜
In April 2023 my sister Sandra was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease after several months of becoming increasingly concerned about her general mobility.
Prior to Sandra's diagnosis she was a keen tennis player, still completing in matches at a high level, always fit and active, as she had previously been a teacher of Physical Education.
Sadly the rapid progression of MND meant that she lost the ability to walk, then gradually impacted on her ability to eat, drink and even breathe. Sandra passed away just 19 months later in November 2024.
Despite the rapid progression of her condition, my sister faced MND with courage, humour and positivity that was inspiring to all those around her. Having supported Sandra's care during this period, I witnessed first hand the devastating impact that MND has on those who have the disease and on the family and friends of those who are directly impacted.
Sandra was always very proud of my previous achievements and challenges. Even as her condition became more severe she would love to talk over my plans to ride all the 48 US States in 48 days, knowing she would not be alive to follow my journey.
So this ride is in my very brave sisters memory and is to raise awareness and money for this fantastic charity. I hope that the funds raised can help The MND Association to continue its efforts to find a cure for this devastating disease and to provide vital support for those who are affected.
Motor neurone disease (MND) is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord. This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting. MND can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe.
However, not all symptoms necessarily happen to everyone and it is unlikely they will all develop at the same time, or in any specific order. Although there is currently no cure for MND, symptoms can be managed to help achieve a best possible quality of life.
We need your support .. 🙏
£110 could provide an overbed table, making it easier for someone with MND to eat, drink and read safely and comfortably in bed
£270 could fund the coordination of care for someone with MND at a Care Centre for a year
£500 could provide a tablet device with specialist communication software, allowing someone to communicate with loved ones.
The MND Association focus on improving access to care, research and campaigning for those people living with or affected by MND in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. By sponsoring me your money will help people affected by Motor Neurone Disease. Once you donate, JustGiving will send your money directly to the MND Association. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and secure, your details are safe - they'll never sell them or send unwanted emails. Thank you again
