Story
Rory had always been an active and lively toddler but, following a number of regular childhood infections in close succession, Rory’s parents received devastating news. In July 2023, aged 3, Rory was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), one of around 400 children to be diagnosed with ALL in the UK each year.
Rory’s diagnosis was just the start of his journey as he, supported by his parents and family, started a 2 and a half year treatment plan under the expert care of the Great North Children’s Hospital.
Since then Rory has undergone surgery, had blood transfusions, received countless rounds of chemotherapy, around 50 visits to hospital in addition to 30 overnight stays, many confined to his room. That’s a huge amount for anyone to handle but Rory tackles everything with incredible bravery and a smile.
It was during one of these stays at Great North Children’s Hospital that Rory and his parents first encountered Forever Eight, a charity formed following another families grief, to support children with life changing illnesses that are forced to spend lots of time at hospital.
Rory received a bag full of arts and craft materials, including paints, colouring books, pottery to paint, pens, teddy’s and much more. This kind and thoughtful gift helped Rory to pass the hours and days in hospital until he was able to return home.
Rory’s mum, Jen, said “The care Rory has received has been first class but no 3 year old wants to be stuck in hospital for days on end. The support received from Forever Eight, and other similar charities, has been amazing during an incredibly difficult time”
