Cj's fundraiser for Working for the Wild

Cj Shamworth is raising money for Working for the Wild

Cycling from John O'Groats to Land's End

We work to protect biodiversity and restore ecosystems worldwide through grassroots community based conservation and wildlife ranger support. Our focus is on lesser supported regions, endangered flora and fauna and threatened habitat.

Story

Hi, my name is Cj.

I am cycling from John O'Groats to Land's End choosing to do over a 1000 mile route which I have wanted to do for many years. I am doing this as a personal challenge knowing that this may take me a long time as I have a few old injuries that I will be carrying. In the process I really would like a good charity to benefit and this will also act as motivation when times get tough as I know that they will.

I have chosen to do this completely independently and unsupported, riding my own bike that I built myself, towing a cargo trailer which will be carrying my food, water, tent, bedding, tools etc. So there will be no comfy hotel or B&B bed at the end of a wet day's riding.

'Working for the Wild' is a small, grassroots charity that targets support for looking after the environment through community action - which brings value to both.

The money raised through my sponsorship will go to one of their projects - supporting the Northern Peru’s Laquipampa Wildlife Refuge. This is home to endangered spectacled bears, threatened tropical dry forests and countless other species including the endangered white-winged guan. Just two passionate rangers work to safeguard this entire protected area, and your support will ensure they have the equipment they need to succeed in their important work.

Basic field equipment (including hiking boots, rain gear, backpacks, a first aid kit and a camera) is crucial. This gear helps the rangers stay safe in remote bear monitoring sites, conduct patrols across rugged terrain, collect biological data, and respond rapidly to illegal activities or emerging threats. It will improve their mobility and capacity to work in challenging weather and difficult landscapes, better equipping them to safeguard the Refuge’s endangered spectacled bears and unique biodiversity.

Please help me to support them.

January update!

Well, on the 24th January, I finally made it over the finish line in Lands' End. The journey took many months. It was a pleasure to meet such a great variety of good people along the way. I enjoyed making many detours, visiting such beautiful and stunning countryside and wildlife. I found myself cycling, walking, and pushing my rig around 1425 miles in the end.

Thank you, all you lovely people who have donated to the charity. It means so much to me to know that these amazing rangers in Peru, who do such a great job in a tough environment, will now be better equipped to carry out their most important work. Thank you all.
