In 2007 our lives were turned upside down when my partner, John, was diagnosed with a progressive form of Multiple Sclerosis, thought to have even triggered by trauma experienced during his 34 year infantry service. He had been a soldier since the age of 18, had lived an active life and surviving injury during service, so his diagnosis came as a huge blow.

John is the most determined and brave person I know, and uses his soldier mentality to battle on and live the best life that he can.

He can no longer walk or use his hands and is totally dependant on care 24/7 but he refuses to give in to the disease and tries to overcome a daily struggle that most of us would not be able to comprehend, in order to maintain an active life for us both.

Help for Heroes continue to leave no stone unturned when supporting John, providing him with equipment that we couldn’t in our wildest dreams be able to afford ourselves. They have given us financial assistance, ongoing emotional support, clinical assessment and advice, and opportunity for both of us to engage in activities that enable John can stay active and doing the things he loved to do before his illness. So often we feel hopeless with our situation and then the charity comes along to lift us back up.

It is John’s grit and determination, and the amazing work that H4H does that has inspired me to challenge myself and take part in the trek.

The challenges that I will face will only represent a fraction of those experienced by our injured, wounded and sick service men and women every day but I want to do a challenge in support of Help for Heroes to pay forward some of the support that we have had and help other veterans and their families who are facing challenges in life that they don’t deserve.
