Story

Myself and Daisy have taken part in the Sue Ryder Starlight Hike for the past 3 years, in memory of Daisy’s Mum, Tina, who we sadly lost due to Cancer.

This year, we have increased our team! We are being joined by our partners and my wonderful family, to walk in additional memory of my Mum, Juliet, who joined Tina up in the heavens on 31st August 2025.

Mum spent her last few months on this earth in pain. Early June she was brushed off by GRH as having a “pulled muscle” in her back. She was fobbed off with minor pain relief medication and told to perform some exercises to help relieve the pain. After several back and forth visits to A&E and pushing the hospital to investigate further, they finally agreed to refer Mum for scans - this was late July. These scans uncovered multiple lesions across her entire body.

After spending 3 weeks on the Oncology ward in CGH, Mum was moved to Sue Ryder Hospice in Leckhampton where she took her final breath on 31st August.

It really happened in the space of 6 weeks. No time to prepare. No time to process what was happening.

We are so incredibly thankful to every single one of the nurses and volunteers at Sue Ryder for the dedicated care and compassion they showed Mum during her time there. It allowed us to be there for her, day in day out as her Husband, her Daughters, her Son, her Grandchildren, her Sisters and her Mother. To sit there and tell her stories, to hold her hand and fluff her pillows.

In lieu of flowers at Mums funeral, we are asking for donations to Sue Ryder. Any amount, even £1 would help go towards giving love and care to those who really need it.

Sue Ryder Starlight Hike provides an opportunity to get together with family and friends under the stars to celebrate the life of someone special and help ensure no one faces death or grief alone.

Every year our Sue Ryder Nurses and bereavement professionals provide care and support to thousands of people facing their darkest days. But we can't do it without you.

Through sponsorship, you can help make every step count towards compassionate and expert end-of-life care and grief support for families in need.

£6 could pay for favourite breakfast for a patient being cared for in one of our hospices.

£30 could fund an hour of expert care, so our Sue Ryder doctors and nurses can help manage patients’ pain and symptoms.

£75 could help provide a vital Online Bereavement Counselling Service for someone who needs reassurance guidance and support.
