Miles for Mark - Hope for Huntington's

Epic team Cycle Ride from Tavistock to London · 19 May 2025
My name is Mark and I belong to Tavistock Wheelers Cycling Club in Devon and my lovely friends at the Club plan to ride from Tavistock to London in May 2025 in aid of a charity very close to my heart, The Huntington’s Disease Association (HDA).
Huntington’s Disease (HD) is a degenerative, neurological, hereditary condition where the faulty gene leads to irreversible damage to the nerve cells in areas of the brain which affects virtually everything about a person, including movements, speech, swallowing, moods and thinking processes. For those whose lives are touched by HD, the effects can be quite devastating. In the UK, there are about 6,000 people with HD at any one time. As it progresses, the individual requires more help and support managing most aspects of their daily lives including personal care, eating, drinking and mobilising.
My mother was diagnosed with HD when she was 68 and I watched her slowly deteriorate over time until she eventually had to go into a care home. The HDA means a lot to me as their helpline and Specialist Adviser were always there to support and help, not just my Mum, but also the family. The Adviser regularly liaised with the care home and other professionals and led staff training to ensure Mum had the best possible care. There was always someone at the end of a telephone that we could talk to.
After being tested for the disease, I received the diagnosis that I have inherited HD.
The fantastic support I have received, and will continue to receive, from the HDA will help me and my wife as we move forward.
At the moment, there is no cure but by sponsoring the amazing cyclists from Tavistock Wheelers Club, you will help to support the daily lives of sufferers like myself and help educate professionals and assist in future research to find a cure.
I know that every penny raised will make a huge difference and I am grateful for all your support.
Thank you to my wonderful friends at Tavistock Wheelers and to you for sponsoring their efforts to raise funds and awareness of Huntingdon's Disease
