Stiamo raccogliendo fondi in memoria di Thomas a sostegno delle Borse di Studio Sanctuary dell'Università del Sussex (GB). Thomas amava profondamente le esperienze e le opportunità che gli sono state offerte durante i suoi studi in Relazioni Internazionali presso L’Università del Sussex. Amava far parte della comunità del Sussex, dove ha incontrato persone provenienti da contesti, nazioni e culture molto diversi. Purtroppo non ha potuto completare il suo percorso.

Le Sanctuary Scholarships (borse di studio presso l’Università del Sussex, GB) riflettono i valori in cui Thomas credeva: che ogni persona, indipendentemente dalle proprie circostanze, debba avere la possibilità di realizzare il proprio potenziale e di accedere all'istruzione universitaria.

Permettono a rifugiati e persone costrette a fuggire dal proprio Paese che vivono nel Regno Unito di studiare all'Università, offrendo loro l'opportunità di proseguire il proprio percorso di formazione e costruire il proprio futuro.

Molti di questi giovani arrivano con le loro famiglie, in fuga da oppressione, persecuzioni e dalla minaccia della tortura. Nel Regno Unito possono accedere all'istruzione fino al termine della scuola secondaria superiore, ma al compimento dei 18 anni diventano adulti e, a causa del loro status di migranti forzati o rifugiati, non possono accedere ai finanziamenti per gli studi universitari. Questa barriera economica interrompe spesso definitivamente il loro percorso di studi.

L'Università del Sussex ha istituito le Borse di Studio Sanctuary per superare questi ostacoli economici. L'Università finanzia due borse di studio complete per corsi di laurea triennale e un'ulteriore borsa di studio per un corso post-laurea. Nel 2020 l'Università del Sussex ha ricevuto il riconoscimento di ‘University of Sanctuary’.

We are fund-raising in Thomas’s memory for the Sanctuary Scholarships at the University of Sussex. Thomas cherished the education, experiences and opportunities offered to him during his time studying International Relations at the University of Sussex. He loved being part of the Sussex community where he met people from so many different backgrounds, cultures and countries. Sadly, he was unable to complete his degree.

The Sanctuary Scholarships reflect Thomas’s belief that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, should be able to fulfil their potential and benefit from higher education. These scholarships enable forced migrants or refugees living in the UK to study at the University of Sussex, allowing to pursue their education and build their future.

Many of these young people arrive with their families, fleeing oppression, persecution and the threat of torture. They can receive education up to secondary school in the UK, but at the age of 18 they become legal adults and their status as forced migrants or refugees means they are ineligible to apply for student funding. This financial barrier often brings their formal education to an end.

The University of Sussex introduced Sanctuary Scholarships to overcome these financial barriers. The University provides for two fully funded undergraduate scholarships and a further scholarship for postgraduate students. Sussex was awarded the title of University of Sanctuary in 2020
