Alzheimer’s is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder affecting primarily memory, thinking & behaviour, & is the most common cause of dementia.

I’d like to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society to fund more money into researching this cruel disease.

Honestly, when my little sister Alex was diagnosed with early onset dementia in 2020 aged just 52, our family went into a state of shock, sadness and grief. Alex, a beautiful lady, mother of three lovely teenagers, an amazing nurse for nearly thirty years, a wonderful daughter, wife, friend to many, sister to me & my brothers. For me, she was my go to.

She still is all those things to us. But her life has changed so dramatically by that hideous, soul destroying, life limiting disease.

Alex is now 58 and has deteriorated so much over the few years. It is heart breaking to see that the activities that we take for granted like chatting, eating, self-care, understanding what’s going on, celebrating stuff, getting hacked off with other stuff have for the most part left her. Gone. That is what this godforsaken disease does.

I hope Alex recognises her kids, who I am, who Mum is, but we don’t know what goes on behind those beautiful (sometimes blank) blue eyes & her huge (but sometimes lost) smile.

We spend time with Alex remembering her amazing adventures and her awesome achievements during her life; whilst we silently cry as we hold her.

We know Alex will not get better.

So, for fundraising:

I am going to go for a cycle ride next week and want to raise as much money as possible for research. Without the research we will continue to lose our lovely ones. There have been some amazing advances recently in research, but still no damn cure.

We will be cycling from Venice down to Porec in Croatia.

We aim to cycle 50 +/- miles a day for seven days. My body will not find this easy especially as my regular exercise is just an early morning dog walk.

Yes, I am cycling on an electric bike which does mean full on pedalling up those mountains (otherwise I’d fall off)

Yes, we have paid someone to carry our bags each day.

Why not. Without this, my cycle ride would be from here just to Woodbridge!
