Story

Nobody thinks cancer is going to come to their door until it does.

On 31 August 2025, I will begin a trek on the highest free-standing mountain in the world - Mount Kilimanjaro. At its highest point, Kilimanjaro stands at 5,895 meters above sea level.

In 2018, whilst training for The Moonwalk Edinburgh in aid of Breast Cancer charity Walk the Walk, I was somewhat ironically diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

Receiving a cancer diagnosis is life-changing; it is emotionally and physically gruelling. I was incredibly lucky to have so much support during this time. However, I felt very unprepared for life after treatment when everyone and everything around me appeared to go back to normal except for me.

I found exercise to be a great coping mechanism and met so many amazing and wonderful people who have become friends along the way.

The ongoing support from Walk the Walk has been invaluable throughout my journey.

Earlier this year, I finished my preventative treatment slightly earlier than expected. While this brings mixed emotions, I am grateful to have had successful treatments that so many people cannot or do not have access to. To acknowledge this privilege, I decided to climb Kilimanjaro.

Walk the Walk has supported me through my own diagnosis but also in the aftermath of losing a loved one to cancer. I will never forget the call from them informing me that our donation had contributed to the purchase of an Action Cancer NI initiative; ā€œThe Big Busā€. This news came at an exceptionally difficult time and provided me with comfort and support when I needed it most.

Walk the Walk is the largest grant-making breast cancer charity in the UK and has provided funding for specific Northern Irish projects such as 'The Big Bus' and purchased two dragon boats for 'The Lagan Dragons.' To date, they have distributed over £137 million to various charities across the UK.

Your contribution will help us continue our mission of providing essential resources and support to those in need.

Please note: Any money raised from events such as Quiz Night, Bonus Ball, or Raffles will be split between two charities - walk the walk & NI Hospice.

Entry to the quiz requires a minimum donation of £5; raffle tickets will be sold on the evening, and bonus ball tickets for the match worn Nunez football shirt can be purchased via Just Giving Donation by stating your preferred number or requesting an allocated number.
