Action on Postpartum Psychosis supports women and families affected by Postpartum Psychosis (PP) across the UK. We provide information and peer support, facilitate research into PP, raise awareness of this rare yet severe postnatal mental illness and campaign for improved services.

Story

I am excited to share that I will be participating in the 2025 Saucony London 10k on the 13th July, to raise awareness about postpartum psychosis, a medical emergency that is seldom spoken about or understood. This cause is close to my heart as my mother experienced postpartum psychosis shortly after my birth. For nearly two months, we were separated while she received treatment in a psychiatric hospital, with no visits or contact allowed. Thankfully, her local network of women rallied around my father during this challenging time, and she eventually made a full recovery. However, this experience has affected her mental health for the following decades and has shaped our relationship in profound ways.

As I reflect on this journey, I remember the anxiety I felt when my partner was pregnant twice. Despite the low odds, I couldn't shake the worry. Fortunately, it did not happen. However, it inspired me to support Action on Postpartum Psychosis (APP). This incredible UK charity works tirelessly to ensure that mothers and families affected by this severe but treatable mental illness receive the support they need.

APP has made significant strides over the years in advocating for Mother and Baby Units (MBUs), allowing mothers to stay with their babies during treatment. Yet there are still areas in the UK without these vital services. Each year, approximately 1,400 new mothers face postpartum psychosis; they deserve our understanding and support.

I am aiming to raise £500 for APP through this event. Your contribution can help provide essential information and peer support for those affected by postpartum psychosis. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of many families who feel isolated during such a challenging time. Please consider supporting me on this journey as we work towards a future where no mother has to face postpartum psychosis alone.

One last thing: Softwire (my employer) will match your donations up to a total of £500!
