Story

The Climb of a Lifetime: Mount Kilimanjaro for Breast Cancer

To raise funds for our second mission to Burundi and the research initiative, a team of 10 (and growing!) incredible individuals is taking on the epic challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

Why Kilimanjaro? Because the struggle the women of Burundi face is an uphill battle of their own, this climb symbolises our commitment to rising to meet it.

By supporting our climb, you’re directly contributing to:

· Procuring modern mammography machines and ultrasound equipment to ensure accurate and affordable screenings.

· Training healthcare professionals to detect breast cancer early and effectively.

· Funding critical research to understand breast cancer trends in Burundi, paving the way for long-term solutions.

Our Mission

In February 2024, our team conducted a mission in Burundi to address these challenges. What we found was heart-breaking:

· Outdated, mismatched equipment cobbled together from different manufacturers, compromising the accuracy of mammograms.

· No suitable viewing monitors for interpreting results, leading to missed diagnoses.

· Ultrasound machines in poor condition, unable to detect small cancers.

· Patients who, even after managing to afford mammograms, couldn’t return for their results because of the unaffordable cost of pathology services.

It’s no wonder many women are diagnosed only in the late stages of breast cancer, when survival becomes a much steeper battle.

This situation is unacceptable, and we’re acting.

In February 2025, we’re heading back to Burundi with renewed determination. This time, we’re launching a retrospective research project on breast cancer in the country from 2019 to the present, aiming to better understand the scope of the issue and find sustainable solutions. Alongside this, we’re working to provide better screening and diagnostic tools for healthcare professionals.

But to make this happen, we need your help.

Breast cancer is a global challenge, but in Burundi, it’s a crisis. In a country with only two outdated and unreliable mammography machines - located in private hospitals that most people cannot afford. The odds are tragically stacked against women facing this disease. Early detection and treatment can save lives, but the severe lack of resources means many women are diagnosed too late, or never at all.

We are determined to change this.
