Story
Help us tell this important story to future generations
Amberley Museum is a 40-acre industrial heritage centre in Sussex. A charity, our aims are to preserve technical and industrial heritage for display and demonstration to our visitors - in order to inform, entertain, and educate.
One of the first exhibits established at Amberley in the 1980s was an operational Strowger telephone exchange. In subsequent years several items from other collections were relocated to Amberley, culminating in the move of the former BT Museum to the site in 2002. This collection now tells the exciting story of communications in the UK from optical telegraph to broadband, and is a major attraction for our visitors – young and old.
We are planning to extend the exhibition to widen the topics covered. A significant part of this project shall be a gallery devoted to charting the impact of telecommunications across the wars of the 20th Century. We will tell the stories of both the technical evolution during wartime and the societal impact that resulted. The gallery will feature stories of the many thousands in the industry who gave service both on the battlefield and the Homefront - especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice,
We are grateful to have received a generous offer of £400k from The Post Office Remembrance Fellowship to support this plan, which is contingent on us finding further funding from other stakeholders in order to complete the project.
Please help us keep alive this important story. Donations of £250 and upwards will receive a mention on our ‘honour board’.
