We work to ensure fair and just immigration, nationality and asylum law and policy and provide direct legal advice to those affected by UK immigration control. JCWI publically campaigns and advocates on behalf of immigrants and for changes to unfair rules and is independent of government funding.

Story

Like many in the Ruby and the Ruby on Rails community, I was filled with hurt this week after reading the postings from a prominent person in of our community.

In the hope of creating something positive to out of this situation, I have made a donation to the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI). I've created a fundraising page to encourage others to join me,

From JCWI's website:

For more than half a century, JCWI has been challenging policies that lead to discrimination, destitution and the denial of rights. And we’ve been providing much-needed legal advice services to the people who need them most. We’ve helped tens of thousands of people secure their status, keep their families together and escape poverty. And we’ve consistently been one of the leading voices for a fairer, more just immigration system that works for everyone.

As someone whose not-so-distant ancestors immigrated to the UK, I care about the work that JCWI does. Currently the UK has a hostile environment to immigrants. They face discrimination and have had their basic rights denied. Worse still, rhetoric from many groups (and certain individuals) incite violence and hate towards immigrants. Over the last 10 years I have first hand seen the effect of this on my close friends and colleagues.

Please consider donating to the JCWI or similar causes.
