24 Concordians will travel to Kenya in June to work with the Moving Mountains Trust charity which supports schools, rural communities and street children in the town of Embu.
The team is aiming to raise £10,000 to fund projects to support the Embu Rescue Centre where around 120 street children from the most difficult backgrounds can get a daily lunch and breakfast and receive help from caring adult staff and volunteers.
Many families struggle to provide meals for their children, and this might be their only meal of the day. Many live in nearby slums with no running water or sanitation. The children face many issues including poverty, pressure to engage in gang membership and substance abuse. The centre opens every day and also provides showers and toilets and space to relax. Moving Mountains in Kenya and Nepal continue to make positive changes to the lives of street children, orphans, slum communities and rural area's through international development projects managed by a team of dedicated staff in-country, many of whom are former street children themselves.
After their volunteering work the team hope to trek and climb Mount Kenya, the 2nd highest mountain in Africa. At just under 5000m the challenging trek takes 5 days and members need to get fit first. So - as part of the fundraising efforts, the team are inviting Concord students, staff, alumni, family and friends to "Climb4Kenya"
This year's Swim 24, a 24 swimming relay at Concord College is also raising funds for this cause.
